McIntosh lifts NU past Virginia Tech

Bryant McIntosh scored 19 points, including a tiebreakin­g layup with 27 seconds left in overtime, to lead Northweste­rn to an 81-79 victory Tuesday against Virginia Tech in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Blacksburg, Virginia.

The Hokies (4-3) called a timeout after McIntosh’s basket and worked the ball to Chris Clarke, who missed a baseline jumper at the buzzer that would have forced a second overtime.

The Wildcats (6-1) led for most of the second half, but Virginia Tech tied the score at 71 on two free throws by Seth Allen with 55.3 seconds left. Both teams then missed shots to win the game in regulation.

Tre Demps added 17 points and Sanjay Lumpkin 12 for NU. Allen led the Hokies with 25 points, and Justin Bibbs added 17.

North Carolina 89, Maryland 81

Marcus Paige scored 20 points in his season debut to spark the No. 9 Tar Heels (6-1) past the No. 2 Terrapins (6-1) in the showcase game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Paige, who missed the first six games of the season with a broken right (non-shooting) hand suffered in a preseason practice, was 7-for-12 from the field for North Carolina, which shot 53 percent.

Melo Trimble had 23 points and 12 assists and Rasheed Sulaimon 18 points for Maryland, which was hurt by 22 turnovers (eight by Trimble) the Tar Heels turned into 21 points.

Virginia 64, Ohio State 58

Malcolm Brogdon scored 22 points, and the No. 10 Cavaliers (6-1) overcame the absence of starting guard London Perrantes (appendecto­my) to slip past the Buckeyes (2-4) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Columbus, Ohio.

Virginia won its fifth consecutiv­e game, but it was the first time during that streak it didn’t score at least 80 points. Ohio State lost its fourth game in a row.

Purdue 72, Pittsburgh 59

A.J. Hammons came off the bench to score 24 points and grab 12 rebounds in place of foul-plagued Isaac Haas, and the No. 11 Boilermake­rs (7-0) held the Panthers (4-1) to 35 percent shooting on their way to a victory in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Pittsburgh.

Michigan 66, North Carolina State 59

Caris LeVert scored 18 points, grabbed nine rebounds and handed out seven assists to fuel the Wolverines (5-2) past the Wolfpack (4-3) in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Illini may lose Thorne for season

Coach John Groce said Mike Thorne Jr., who averaged 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds in Illinois’ first seven games, might miss the rest of the season after having surgery for a torn meniscus in his left knee.
