Collecting images before you start is an important part of the creative process and helps ensure that you make a coherent character.
When I set about making a creature that doesn’t actually exist, I like to take real animals as references for some of the body parts. This provides a great guideline for shaping a believable being with an interesting silhouette and a realistic anatomy.
I also like to look at my favourite artists and find inspiration in their graphic worlds. My main references in this image were Ken Barthelmey, Ben Mauro, Benjamin Erdt and Neville Page.
