Col­lect­ing im­ages be­fore you start is an im­por­tant part of the cre­ative process and helps en­sure that you make a co­her­ent char­ac­ter.

When I set about mak­ing a crea­ture that doesn’t ac­tu­ally ex­ist, I like to take real an­i­mals as ref­er­ences for some of the body parts. This pro­vides a great guide­line for shap­ing a be­liev­able be­ing with an in­ter­est­ing sil­hou­ette and a re­al­is­tic anatomy.

I also like to look at my favourite artists and find in­spi­ra­tion in their graphic worlds. My main ref­er­ences in this im­age were Ken Barthelmey, Ben Mauro, Ben­jamin Erdt and Neville Page.
