It’s best to avoid us­ing par­ti­cles in­stead of phys­i­cal ge­om­e­try be­cause they have a weird UV sys­tem. This means that it never seems to quite work the way you want it to. Also, you might end up with as many maps as the par­ti­cles them­selves, which isn’t good at all.
