It’s that time of year again where the brightest minds in the world of graphics and interactive techniques gather together for SIGGRAPH Asia. Hosted in Thailand for the first time, SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 will be held in the vibrant city of Bangkok, at the International Trade and Exhibition Centre (BITEC), which expects to welcome approximately 7,000 attendees from over 60 countries through its doors.

This year’s theme – The Celebration of Life and Technology – aims to showcase how human experiences help push the boundaries of digital imaging, research, science, art, animation, gaming, interactivity, education and emerging technologies. As well as a couple of stellar keynote speakers, other featured sessions include senior graphics software engineers at Pixar Animation Studios Pol Jeremiasvila and David G Yu on how real-time graphics helps Pixar makes feature films, director of engineering at Facebook Brian Cabral on the future of VR/AR and VFX supervisor at Framestore Richard Hoover on the making of Blade Runner 2049.

Also keeping attendees busy will be the Emerging Technologies program, aiming to demonstrate how research on interactive technologies can help us in our everyday lives. If how we interact with digital content and novel uses of graphics on mobile devices is more your forte, be sure to check out the Symposium on Mobile Graphics and Interactive Applications (MGIA) too. SIGGRAPH Asia will also see the return of the VR showcase, highlighting the impact of immersive VR in various fields, and the ever-popular Computer Animation Festival, showcasing a world-wide collection of the year’s best works.

And if all that wasn’t enough to whet your appetite, leading brands including Epic Games, FORUM8, Fox Renderfarm, Ritsumeikan University, SOFA Framework, The Khronos Group and Tsinghua will be there to demonstrate their developments in hardware and software applications.

Exciting times

“Over a decade, SIGGRAPH Asia has grown from a niche event to one of the largest computer graphics and interactive techniques conference and exhibitions in the region,” says Dr. Surapong Lertsithichai, SIGGRAPH Asia 2017 Conference chair and director, Center for Creative Economy Project, Mahidol University, Thailand. “This year, we are proud to host SIGGRAPH Asia in Bangkok, which is home to one of the region’s fastest-growing computer graphics and animation industries. It is a very exciting time to be in an industry that is evolving so quickly, where we are using technology to change the way we experience new things.”

Having been lucky enough to attend SIGGRAPH Asia in the past, the 3D World team can vouch that this conference really does have something for everyone. It’s also an amazing opportunity to network with some of the most influential people in the industry right now – and who knows what opportunities might arise? We hope to see you there!

sometimes it’s the venue that makes all the difference. 2017’s event is to be held in the impressive Bitec, Bangkok
