The Territory philosophy

3D World - - INDUSTRY -

Territory offers a wide range of services To a wide range of clients across film, broadcast, vfx, branding and digital. but There’s a philosophy That cuts across all of it, says founder and executive creative director david sheldon-hicks

“We take that view that going back to the Bauhaus, the idea is that you’re a design problem solver first and foremost, and we’ve found ourselves over the last seven years discovering these particular specialisms that people want us for. So that can be on-set screen graphics, which might not just be a standard screen, or might be 3D projection or something like that. It can be designed visual effects, bringing graphic design to VFX in a very pure way. It can be a title sequence. It can be big installation pieces.”

It’s rare to find an entire studio devoted to such tasks, he notes: most on-set screen graphics are created by freelancers or internal departments at studios like Warner Bros. “There are also VFX studios who do the graphics in post [production], but unlike us they don’t usually do the on-set bit,” explains Sheldon-hicks. “So we find ourselves competing with everyone and no one at the same time.”

Given their finely honed focus, Territory are currently “dabbling” in forging their own bespoke software. “We took on a pipeline TD about six months ago, and he’s been developing an internal toolset. Some of these are asset-tracking tools, in collaboration with Shotgun. We’re also looking at integration within After Effects and Photoshop, and helping all the different toolsets talk to one another in a really consistent way.”

Territory’s evolution may have gone down an unexpected alley, but Sheldon-hicks is happy with how things have turned out. “We’ve grown in the time when there were many established agencies, and we had to find our little areas to slip between,” he says. “And it was the overlaying and the combination of different skillsets that allowed us to do things in a different way to the established agencies.”
