3D World - - SHOWCASE - imagine

This brilliant image is based on an illustration of the same name by Cory Loftis, and when 3D artist Javier Diaz came across it he saw an opportunity to expand his skill set. “I really wanted to do it justice, so I looked for a good way to create feathers,” he explains. “I was told Yeti was the way to go, as it’s a quick way to change things non-destructively. This was also my first time using Houdini to generate a VDB, and luckily the program made it very easy to generate one.”

Javier’s process begins with laying out basic shapes and forms in Zbrush.“i'll then retopo and unwrap in Maya, before I move into creating the serious details,” he continues. “Once I've done the modelling, I’ll begin work on the groom as that takes the longest. Once that's all laid out I move into shading and texturing. This was also the first time I've used Redshift at home and I loved how quickly it allowed me to look dev this character. I was able to export all the fur and feathers to Redshift Proxy, as that helps me look dev while the IPR is going.”
