AFTER be­ing on the mar­ket for near-on two decades – and even then it was not all that dif­fer­ent to its GQ pre­de­ces­sor – the GU Pa­trol is one of the best-ser­viced ve­hi­cles by the 4x4 af­ter­mar­ket in­dus­try. Not only can you get the reg­u­lar bull­bars, sus­pen­sion, wheels and tyres, roof racks, etc. for the GU, but there is a host of more rad­i­cal mod­i­fi­ca­tions that can make the Pa­trol more powerful, more ca­pa­ble and more suit­able for your spe­cific ap­pli­ca­tions.

The ZD30 might be the only en­gine of­fered by Nis­san, but work­shops fit Toy­ota and GM diesel en­gines as well as GM petrol V8s with rel­a­tive ease. Lower geared trans­fer cases, front and rear diff locks, com­pe­ti­tion-de­rived sus­pen­sion pack­ages and 37-inch tyres can make the GU un­stop­pable when off-road.

How about a GU with a 6.0-litre V8 en­gine, sixspeed auto, coilovers, Marks 4WD por­tal axles and 35-inch mud­dies? Yes please!
