BRAMWELL CUP BUSH CAR­NI­VAL AND RACES (QLD)

Bramwell Sta­tion, Cape York, is wel­com­ing neigh­bours and vis­i­tors from July 1-3 for some old-style horse races. There’ll be great events for younger car­ni­val-go­ers, with mu­sic and en­ter­tain­ment for all. MARREE PIC­NIC RACES & GYMKHANA (SA)

Over the June long week­end (June 11-12), the Marree Pic­nic Races, Gymkhana & Mo­torkhana will be held at Marree race­course. HENRY LAW­SON FES­TI­VAL (NSW)

Henry Law­son, one of Aus­tralia’s most fa­mous poets, was born on Gren­fell’s gold­fields in 1867. To com­mem­o­rate his birth and his con­tri­bu­tion to the arts, Gren­fell will host the an­nual Henry Law­son Fes­ti­val from June 9-13. En­tries are re­ceived na­tion­ally for verse, short sto­ries, paint­ing and pho­tog­ra­phy, and per­form­ers travel vast dis­tances to par­tic­i­pate in the fes­ti­val year af­ter year. STEAM RALLY ECHUCA (VIC)

This ma­jor com­mu­nity event, or­gan­ised an­nu­ally by Echuca Moama Ro­tary, is held over the June long week­end (June 11-12). FINKE DESERT RACE (NT)

Aus­tralia’s great­est desert race is on again. Held each year dur­ing the Queen’s Birth­day long week­end, the Tatts Finke Desert Race is an off-road, multi-ter­rain, two-day race for bikes, cars, bug­gies and quads through desert coun­try from Alice Springs to the small Aputula (Finke) com­mu­nity. It has the rep­u­ta­tion of be­ing one of the most dif­fi­cult of­froad cour­ses in one of the most re­mote places in the world, and it’s the most fun you can have with a hel­met on! BIG RED BASH (QLD)

Aus­tralia’s mag­nif­i­cent out­back desert sand dune, ‘Big Red’ near Birdsville on the edge of the Simp­son Desert, will play host to some of Aus­tralia’s most recog­nised mu­sic leg­ends in­clud­ing Jimmy Barnes and Paul Kelly. AUS­TRALIAN KELPIE MUSTER (VIC)

A huge crowd is ex­pected to de­scend on Caster­ton,vic­to­ria, on June 11-12 to cel­e­brate the 20th an­niver­sary cel­e­bra­tions of the Aus­tralian Kelpie Muster. On the Satur­day there will be the Kelpie Fes­ti­val, which hosts a range of events in­clud­ing the Kelpie Triathlon – con­sist­ing of the Kelpie High Jump (you won’t be­lieve how high they jump), the Kelpie Dash and the Kelpie Hill Climb. Other pop­u­lar events are the Kelpie Street Pa­rade, Kelpie Pin­ball and the nov­elty events, just to name a few. There are street stalls and lo­cal pro­duce and mer­chan­dise avail­able. On the Sun­day there will be the Work­ing Dog Auc­tion, which demon­strates the unique abil­ity of the Kelpie and at­tracts buy­ers and ven­dors from all over Aus­tralia. THE ESSENCE OF ARDI (WA)

The Essence of Ardi show­cases the cul­ture of the Dampier Penin­sula, north-east of Broome. Sam­ple the best of the coast and coun­try at this amaz­ing event hosted by the friendly Lom­bad­ina Com­mu­nity. There will be lo­cally made art, jew­ellery and tra­di­tional arte­facts from all over the Dampier Penin­sula, while lo­cal culi­nary iden­ti­ties will be pre­par­ing tra­di­tional foods from the area. There’ll be plenty of live mu­sic through­out the day, with a clos­ing per­for­mance by the Penin­sula’s own Bardi Dance Troupe. Ardi will take place on May 30.
