THERE was a time when Aus­tralia was the Pa­trol’s big­gest mar­ket, sell­ing more than 9000 ve­hi­cles a year in the early 2000s. Back then, Nis­san’s Aus­tralian arm had some in­flu­ence over the Pa­trol’s de­sign and the de­vel­op­ment of the en­gines that would best suit our mar­ket, but that’s no longer the case.

The Y62 Pa­trol was pri­mar­ily de­vel­oped for the North Amer­i­can and Mid­dle East mar­kets, hence the ab­sence of a diesel en­gine op­tion. There have been plenty of ru­mours do­ing the rounds that V6 and V8 diesel en­gines might find their way un­der the bon­net of the Y62 Pa­trol, but that will not hap­pen in this gen­er­a­tion of Pa­trol.

For now, if you want to get your hands on a new diesel Pa­trol, you’ll have to grab a GU with the four-cylin­der ZD30 – and you’d want to be quick, be­cause they’re now in run-out mode.
