OKAY, we’ve said the Ood­na­datta Track can be driven in a Kombi or Com­modore, and there are khak­ishirted he­roes who will claim, “did it in a day, mate, and never had a prob­lem”. But it is a re­mote area with ex­treme tem­per­a­tures, and, as with any travel through a re­mote area, you must carry equip­ment and hard­ware and be pre­pared for me­chan­i­cal mal­adies. In par­tic­u­lar, plenty of wa­ter must be car­ried – tem­per­a­tures can ex­ceed 45°C, which means your life ex­pectancy with­out ad­e­quate hy­dra­tion can be mea­sured in mere hours, not days.
