LOOKING at annual dual-range 4WD sales in 2010 and 2015, it’s clear 4WDS with a transfer case are not a dying breed, despite the raft of new softroader SUVS on the market.
The 4WD ute segment (where almost all offerings have dual-range) has seen the biggest growth, with 134,003 examples sold in 2015, compared with just 93,956 in 2010 – an increase of 43 per cent.
Ten dual-range large SUV wagons sold 18,723 between them in 2010. By 2015, 58,098 were sold among 12 models (including both the Mitsubishi Challenger and its replacement the Pajero Sport), a jump of 31 per cent.
There were six dual-range-only luxury 4WDS in both 2010 and 2015 (although by 2015 the category was split into luxury and upper luxury), with 4421 sold in 2010. By the end of 2015 there were 6468 sold, an improvement of 15 per cent.
Upper large SUVS (Patrol and Landcruiser 200) sales declined 11 per cent from 12,256 to 11,007.
