Heritage vote for winery

Katanning’s historic Piesse Winery is to be considered for State Heritage listing.

The Shire of Katanning was due to vote on supporting a proposal by the State Heritage Office to enter the former winery into the State Register of Heritage Places on Tuesday night.

The historic site, with its prominent red-brick distillery tower, along with some vine remnants, is on Warren Road, and is on the Municipal Heritage Inventory.

Vineyards were established by the famous Piesse family as early as the 1890s, but it first began wine production in 1901, with the current building constructed in 1910.

The wines produced at the site won awards across Australia.

The Shire council was set to vote in favour of supporting inclusion of the winery building and immediate surroundings but wished to exclude surrounding land, flagged for future subdivision.

The report to the council said “that as the balance of the land has been identified for urban development for some time, council does not support the inclusion of the balance of land into the register as it may impact on the timeliness of future development of that land”. It said inclusion of the winery on the register was considered in June, 2014 but while the council supported the inclusion of buildings and immediate surrounds, it did not support the balance of the property joining the register.

The report said current landowners were in support of its inclusion on the register but also supported development of surrounding land for subdivision.

“Entry on the State Register reflects the significance of the former winery and affords the appropriate level of protection,” the report said. “The for- mer Piesse Winery has cultural heritage significance and has aesthetic, historic, scientific and social value.

“The distillery tower is also significant architecturally and is a rare example of Federation Gothic-style applied to an industrial building.”
