Musical talent from the Great Southern region got a shot at a big break recently as part of the Sounds of the Great Southern compilation project.

Ten original songs have been recorded and will show the diversity of musical talent brewing in the region.

The CD, produced by West Australian Music, will be launching this Saturday at Albany Town Hall, supported by Vancouver Arts Centre.

Out of a record-breaking 115 applicants, 10 were selected and the CD was produced at a pop-up recording studio in Albany.

Genres covered include everything from rock to folk, dub, electro pop, adult contemporary, reggae, and rhythmic jazz pop.

Each artist will have their chance to shine at the town hall opening.

Acts will include The Tidswell Twins, 40 Kays Out, Ron Coyne, Rastatrix, Carla Geneve and Isla Imogen.

The Albany Advertiser recently spoke with musician Carla Geneve about how she was finding the experience.

“Recording with WAM is such a fantastic opportunity as a young rural artist to experience the professional side of the music industry in a friendly and welcoming environment,” she said. “My ideas and visions for my song were really taken seriously and the final product . . . was very true to my original plans and live version of the song, while also having incorporated great production ideas from the crew.”

Geneve said she felt lucky to have been a part of the project.
