Al­bany-Bayswa­ter win heated clash

A goal from vet­eran Libero Pi­etropaolo has proved the dif­fer­ence be­tween Al­banyBayswa­ter and Rovers in round 15 of the Great South­ern Soc­cer As­so­ci­a­tion men’s open league at the North Road soc­cer grounds on Sun­day af­ter­noon.

In a fiery clash be­tween the two sides, Pi­etropaolo found the back of the net in only his fifth game of the sea­son to help his side record a tense 1-0 win, Al­bany-Bayswa­ter’s third tri­umph of the league sea­son.

Rovers were re­duced to 10 men after Bradley Chap­man re­ceived a red card, while team­mate Thomas McKen­zie and Al­banyBayswa­ter’s Ni­cholas Pi­etropaolo were both given yel­low cards dur­ing the heated fix­ture.

On Satur­day night Polo­nia recorded their sixth victory of the sea­son after thump­ing the bot­tom-placed Roy­als 5-1.

Jared Wiegele scored twice for Polo­nia, who also had Jack McNamee, Ja­son Wil­son and Da­mon Fehrman on the score sheet.

League cham­pi­ons Cale­do­nians were also winners in round 15 after the sec­ond-placed Phoenix for­feited to them.

Last Fri­day’s women’s league A matches were washed out and their fi­nal games will be played this week along with some ear­lier washouts from the men’s open com­pe­ti­tion.

Den­mark Black and Mt Barker United are still locked to­gether on 34 points at the top of the league stand­ings after both sides lost in round 15 last week.

Roy­als beat Mt Barker United 3-1, while Den­mark White pre­vailed 3-0 over Den­mark Black.

Polo­nia White thrashed Bayswa­ter 11-0 in the other re­sult.

Mean­while in the men’s mas­ters last week, Cale­do­nians won 7-1 against Cross Keys United and The Vets won their sec­ond game of the sea­son, down­ing Den­mark 4-3.

Rovers de­feated Al­bany-Bayswa­ter 5-3 and Polo­nia proved too strong for Old Boys 4-1.

The re­main­ing league fix­tures across all four com­pe­ti­tions will be played this week be­fore at­ten­tion turns to cup finals.
