Knights win af­ter buzzer

Two clutch free throws af­ter the fi­nal buzzer from Matt Leary se­cured Knights a stun­ning come­back against Den­markAl­bany Spar­tans in the open­ing fix­ture of the Al­bany Bas­ket­ball As­so­ci­a­tion men’s A-grade com­pe­ti­tion on Tues­day night.

Trail­ing by six points in­side the fi­nal two min­utes, Knights cut the mar­gin to four af­ter Tom Ed­wards made a cru­cial steal and lay-up.

Spar­tans failed to score at the other end and af­ter two missed three-point at­tempts from Knights, Leary drained his long-range shot to make it a one-point game with 20 sec­onds left.

An er­rant long pass from Spar­tans was in­ter­cepted by Leary, who was then fouled as he dished off to Ed­wards at the fi­nal whis­tle. How­ever, Spar­tans were in the penalty, giv­ing Leary a chance to win the game and the star guard fin­ished ac­cord­ingly to nail both foul shots and steal an un­likely 32-31 vic­tory.

Spar­tans had led all match with ath­letic big man Sam Bad­de­leyHolmes dom­i­nat­ing the of­fen­sive glass to fin­ish with 13 points while guards Hunter Richards and Taj Wil­liams gave Spar­tans plenty of spark.

Leary was sim­ply bril­liant to lead all scor­ers with 15 points, in­clud­ing his side’s fi­nal five points while Keanu Wee­den and Henry and Hen­rick Al­forque all chipped in with five points each.

Mean­while, Tigers over­came a slow start to beat Am­bas­sadors 46-40 with John San­tia pour­ing in 16 points in­clud­ing four three­p­oint­ers and Corey Hill fin­ished with 12 points.

Am­bas­sadors were best served by Ryan Bar­ber (nine points) and Jaylen Beat­tie (8).

Bark­ing Owls out­lasted Raiders un­der-18 Devel­op­ment Squad 57-41 with Red Rogers (14 points) and Car­win Gar­cia (12) lead­ing the way while Raiders’ Hen­rick Al­forque also scored 12 points.

Crabs got their sea­son off to a win­ning start as they de­feated new side Pel­i­cans, 32-29.

Crabs’ new re­cruit Zac Pear­son fin­ished with 12 points while James Lan­gridge top scored for Pel­i­cans with 10 points.
