Young­sters make a splash at States

Al­bany Swim Club’s Sharks and Ju­nior Mar­lin squads have pro­duced a num­ber of strong re­sults at the 2017 Ju­nior Short Course State Cham­pi­onships held in Perth re­cently.

Send­ing their big­gest qual­i­fy­ing group to Septem­ber’s event with 15 com­peti­tors from the age of 7-12 hit­ting the wa­ter, the Sharks came away with sev­eral im­pres­sive per­for­mances in­clud­ing a set of stel­lar re­sults from Coco Smar­giassi.

Coco fin­ished with five medals at the meet, which were all in per­sonal best times after claim­ing gold in the 10 years 50m back­stroke to go with a 50m freestyle sil­ver medal and bronze medals in the 100m freestyle, 100m back­stroke and 200m in­di­vid­ual med­ley.

Fel­low ASC mem­bers Cairo Smar­giassi, An­gus Bowles, An­gus Ren­nie, Macken­zie Wilkin­son and Stella Glee­son all achieved 100 per cent per­sonal bests for the cham­pi­onships.

The 10-year-old con­tin­gent also had a bril­liant meet with Har­riet Martin swim­ming three per­sonal best times, Ned Shep­herd achiev­ing five, Hamish Bowles and Coco Smar­giassi fin­ish­ing with eight and It­suki Tomita had 10 as well.

Bronte Fethers, 12, achieved 10 per­sonal bests from 11 events to sit just out­side the top 10 in her age group.

Hamish Bowles, It­suki Tomita, Ned Shep­herd, Coco Smar­giassi, An­gus Bowles and Cairo Smar­giassi all achieved 30 top-10 fin­ishes be­tween them through­out the two-day meet.

ASC Sharks squad coach Nicole Beat­tie said it was a very pleas­ing cham­pi­onships.

“It’s ex­cit­ing to see such young swim­mers be­ing able to ex­e­cute a race plan suc­cess­fully and come out with such great re­sults,” she said.

“They train re­ally hard all-year round, so to go to States and have every­thing fall in to place is great to watch.”

The ASC team was rep­re­sented by Hope Batch­e­lor, Hamish Bowles, Stella Glee­son, Har­riet Martin, Blake McFar­lane, Lily Parker Hal­stead, Creed Shep­herd, Ned Shep­herd, Coco Smar­giassi, It­suki Tomita and Macken­zie Wilkin­son (Sharks) along with An­gus Bowles, Bronte Fethers, An­gus Ren­nie and Cairo Smar­giassi (Ju­nior Mar­lins).

It was Stella, Macken­zie and Creed’s first States, with Creed be­ing the youngest team mem­ber ever at 7.
