Scamozzi leads Raiders to win with game-high haul

Albany Advertiser - - BASKETBALL - Cameron Newbold

For the second time this season, Raiders under-18 development squad have defeated Flames, with the energetic young side drawing away in the second half to notch a three-point win in round 4 of the Albany Basketball Association women’s A-grade competition on Tuesday night.

After downing Flames 45-31 in their season opener last month, the David Arthur-drilled youngsters harassed and pressured their opponents from the outset.

Level at half-time, the two sides traded baskets early in the second period before guard Ella Scamozzi took control for Raiders.

Scamozzi banged in 12 secondhalf points to firstly open up an advantage for her side and, when Flames got back on level terms, she helped them skip clear once again.

Juliette Storm provided assistance with six points in the second half while Kayla Thomas (11 points) helped cause turnovers and Marissa Vandemescht grabbed vital rebounds in the 44-41 triumph.

However, the presence of Sca- mozzi was not to be forgotten, the silky smooth guard helping herself to a game-high 15 points as she guided her side to a second win.

Flames challenged the Raiders midway through the second half as they fought back from 13 points down to draw level nearing the final five minutes.

Much of that was courtesy of Bridgette Latham, who dragged her side back into the game with an impressive offensive display that yielded 13 points, including 11 in the second half.

Centre Chelsea Grove chipped in with 10 points while star Zandalee Arthur got into foul trouble and was quiet with only four points.

A fine performance from twins Nardia and Narelle Humphries lifted last season’s grand finalists Magpies to their second win of the season in the other clash.

Nardia Humphries finished with 14 points and Narelle Humphries added 12 as Magpies prevailed 4539 over Panthers, to claim top spot on the ladder. Fellow big Nina Smith was busy for Panthers with 13 points and Scamozzi, in her second match of the night, finished with nine points.
