19-year-old killed as car runs into tree

Po­lice are in­ves­ti­gat­ing a crash which claimed the life of a 19-year-old man on Al­bany High­way near North Ban­nis­ter, one of two mo­tor ac­ci­dents at the week­end.

Ma­jor Crash in­ves­ti­ga­tors say a black Mazda 6 sedan was be­ing driven south on Al­bany High­way near Wearne Road about 10.40pm on Satur­day when the car left the road and struck a tree.

The teen driver, from Maranga­roo, died at the scene. He was the only per­son in the car. Ear­lier in the evening a pedes­trian was taken to hos­pi­tal af­ter be­ing struck as he walked along the Great South­ern High­way south of Wa­gin.

Lo­cal po­lice say a sil­ver Holden Com­modore was be­ing driven north along the high­way about 10.05pm when it struck a 44-year-old Katan­ning man walk­ing south on the same side of the road.

Wa­gin po­lice of­fi­cers were con­duct­ing a pa­trol in the area and came across the crash scene, about 3km south of Lime Lake Road East in WA’s Great South­ern.

The pedes­trian was taken to Katan­ning District Hos­pi­tal by St John Am­bu­lance to be treated for in­juries to his arms and legs.

The driver of the Holden Com­modore and his pas­sen­ger stopped at the scene.
