Magpies edge Bulls in semifinal dress rehearsal
Denmark-Walpole and Mt Barker will meet for the second consecutive week after the pair faced each other in the final round of the Southern Districts Junior Football Association under-13 competition last Saturday.
The Magpies got the upper hand in the round 15 clash by 17 points at St Joseph’s College, kicking three goals after half-time to secure a seventh win of the season.
Despite the loss, the Bulls finished in fifth place on the ladder and will now face the Magpies again this Saturday in the sudden-death first semifinal at St Joseph’s College at 10.30am.
The Bulldogs will head into the second semifinal with winning form after a 13-point win over the Crows in their last qualifying game. A four-goal first half had the Bulldogs up by 25 points at half-time but the Crows fought back with five majors of their own in the last half.
The Bulldogs’ opponents in the final will be the Saints, who lost a two-point thriller to the Swans last Saturday.
The winner of the second semifinal at 9am will progress to play minor premiers the Eagles next week for a berth in the grand final. Meanwhile, in the under-15s competition, the Bulldogs and Swans will face off in the elimination first semifinal at Tigerland on Saturday.
The two sides met in round 15 last week, with the Bulldogs winning a tight contest by eight points, 7.8 (50) to 6.6 (42).
Mt Barker and the Saints will clash in the double-chance second semifinal, also at Tigerland, on Sunday, with a grand final spot on the line.
