Five days and 400km later, Queensland ultra-marathon athlete Jamie Milne ran into Albany in support of Alzheimer’s research on Wednesday.

In honour of his grandmother Mary, Milne will run 1800km solo through the South West over 15 consecutive days.

Now in its ninth year, Many Miles for Mary will donate the money raised to the Alzheimer’s Australia Dementia Research Foundation.

Milne said he hoped to raise more than $20,000 this campaign.

“(Grandma) had the earlyonset dementia but it took 12 years until she passed,” he said.

“But in the early 90s, there wasn’t much education about (dementia).

“I think educating families and carers as to how you can support those living with dementia has come in leaps and bounds.

“The more I learn about it, the more I realise it’s just the simple things . . . keep things simple — try and educate people to be a bit more patient . . . and just love them. They are still there.”

According to Alzheimer’s WA, 69,000 people will be living with dementia by 2050. During his journey, Milne has visited schools and Alzheimer’s care organisations, including Hawthorn House.

“We are speaking at a few schools on the way through, and I think that all helps, creates a bit of noise as to what we are doing,” Milne said.

“This disease of forgetfulness stole the one person in my life I never wanted to lose.

“She was a mother to me, a friend and a nurturer.”
