Fewer cat­tle but bet­ter qual­ity at sale

Num­bers were down for a to­tal yard­ing of 285 mainly good-qual­ity cat­tle at Mt Barker sa­le­yard, with agents ad­vis­ing small num­bers were mostly be­cause of road clo­sures af­ter heavy rain.

The yard­ing was dom­i­nated by young cat­tle, prices lift­ing with smaller num­bers and bet­ter qual­ity on of­fer, and light­weight steers sold to a top of 366¢/kg.

Weaner steers sold from 298¢ to 366¢/kg and heifers made 238¢ to 286¢/kg. Medium-weight year­ling steers were up 4¢/kg, sell­ing from 262¢ to 296¢/kg, while the lightweights made 302¢/kg.

Heavy­weight year­ling heifers were up 20¢/kg, sell­ing for 272¢/ kg, while the medi­ums gained 27¢/kg to av­er­age 279¢/kg.
