Fewer cattle but better quality at sale
Numbers were down for a total yarding of 285 mainly good-quality cattle at Mt Barker saleyard, with agents advising small numbers were mostly because of road closures after heavy rain.
The yarding was dominated by young cattle, prices lifting with smaller numbers and better quality on offer, and lightweight steers sold to a top of 366¢/kg.
Weaner steers sold from 298¢ to 366¢/kg and heifers made 238¢ to 286¢/kg. Medium-weight yearling steers were up 4¢/kg, selling from 262¢ to 296¢/kg, while the lightweights made 302¢/kg.
Heavyweight yearling heifers were up 20¢/kg, selling for 272¢/ kg, while the mediums gained 27¢/kg to average 279¢/kg.
