Up to 800 competitors are expected for Interschools
THE SOUTH Australian Interschools competition will be held at Mt Buller this year, during the second week of our school holidays from July 13 to 16.
We receive entries from large school groups to individual family groups and all are welcome to enjoy the week of activities.
Please check out our website, www.saski.org. au for more information on the Interschools and get your entries in ASAP.
Regretfully, we announce the finish of our long running “Snow Gear Sale”. SASKI has been organising this event for 32 years and it allowed people to buy pre-loved gear. I would like to take this opportunity to extend many thanks to our longstanding organisers Barry Blakebrough and Graham Brown for their input.
Finally, I hope everyone enjoys their skiing this winter.
THE YEAR started very well for SnowSports ACT, with local aerials skier Laura Peel taking out the World Aerials Championships in Austria in January.
Laura has been performing well on the World Cup circuit for the past few years and placed 7th in Sochi and has had many podium finishes on the World Cup circuit
The new title is well deserved and we look forward to seeing Laura at the next Olympics in Korea in 2018.
Laura becomes the fourth Australian woman to win an aerial skiing World Championships title.
In April, Laura was awarded the joint title of Australia’s ‘Snowsports Athlete of the Year’ with Scotty James at the Ski and Snowboard Australia Awards and along with athlete and coach recognition at the awards, two school awards were presented to those participating in the Interschools Snowsports Championships across Australia.
Canberra school, St Clare’s College won the national school award for Outstanding Achievement for Small Schools.
Congratulations to St Clare’s College. School club of the Year went to Caulfield Grammar in Melbourne, with Marist College in Canberra being nominated as the NSW/ACT representative.
Athletes have been preparing for the local season long before the first snowfalls.
The ACT junior cross country out of season training program has been busy with new members joining each week.
The program provides a fun and safe ski training environment with highly qualified coaches.
The training is based on all round athletic development and technique improvement using roller skis, athletics and games.
The regular sessions were mostly held at Stromlo Forest Park and the Australian Institute of Sport and SnowSports ACT also ran a pre season training fitness program targeted at Interschools and junior athletes in term two this year.
We are expecting 800 competitors to compete in the ACT/Southern NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships from July 29 to 31 at Perisher.
The popular ACT Schools Cup is in its 6th year and is introducing cross country as a third discipline, along with Alpine and Snowboard GS.
The inaugural event will be held on July 12 and school students can compete as individuals and/or part of a team of three.
The event is run similar to Interschools where students compete in their Interschools division (year at school) and the top three teams and individuals are recognised.
Team results from the event will go towards the overall ACT Schools Cup point score, which awards the best male and female primary and secondary schools after the Alpine and Snowboard events are held on September 6.
