Div 6 Alpine - a new awards and event category in 2016
THE NSW Interschools Snowsports Championships is a series of snow sports competitions where school students can compete in teams or as individuals across seven snowsports disciplines.
These include Alpine Giant Slalom, Ski Cross, Snowboard Giant Slalom, Snowboard Cross, Cross-Country Relay, CrossCountry Freestyle, and Freestyle Moguls events.
The 2015 events attracted 8919 competitor entries from 250 NSW, 32 ACT and 31 QLD schools, with 3029 competitors taking part in the Championships. The entry numbers makes Interschools Snowsports one of the single biggest sporting events in Australia at any level.
Last season, we also experienced an overall growth of over 20 per cent in new schools entering the NSW/QLD/ACT Interschools Championships, including 18 Queensland schools.
We are looking forward to the season ahead with a couple of new developments. For the first time, competitors will be able to enter Division 6 Alpine, a new awards and event category for those in kindergarten to year 2. The event will be a perfect opportunity to introduce new ski racers to Interschools in a non threatening environment.
The course at the regional championships will be shorter than other Alpine courses and competitors can qualify for Division 6 Alpine events at both the NSW State and National Championships.
At the recent Ski & Snowboard Australia Awards, two NSW schools took out the National school awards.
Jindabyne Central School won School Snowsports Club of the Year and Wenona won Outstanding Achievement for Smaller Schools with their crosscountry skiing program.
Matt Graham, former Interschools competitor for Central Coast Grammar won Athlete of the Year, for his amazing season in which he won his first World Cup and ended the season ranked second in the world.
Junior Athlete of the Year went to Snowboard Halfpipe athlete Emily Arthur, former Interschools competitor from St John Bosco and NSW Snowsports athlete.
The Interschools Championships is a mass participation event and is suitable for all levels of skiers and boarders, from first time racers to aspiring athletes and professionals.
It is a starting block for further competition, which has seen at least 20 Olympians start their career at Interschools competitions.
