PEOPLE AROUND BRIGHT AND KIEWA VALLEY

Alpine Observer - - News -

What is your job?

I am a freelance photographer. I work in lots of genres but I specialise in landscapes from around our local area. I particularly love weather, especially lightning storms. People think I’m crazy because I go out in all weathers to take lightning shots. They say I’m going to get struck but I don’t care as long as I get the picture. I display my work on Facebook and on my webpage and I sell my work as hard copies. I sometimes post my work on the “What’s Happening” Facebook page and I have been overwhelmed by the number of likes I get. I am also the official photographer for the Mt Beauty Speedway.

How do you come to be in this job?

I worked in hospitality for 38 years and after all that time in kitchens and fast food shops I thought it was time for the big change. As soon as I left my last job I thought this is make it or break it time. I started my own business, and I am my own boss for the first time. I started just playing around, then I did an on-line course and another course at the Mt Beauty Neighbourhood Centre.

Have you always wanted to work in this sort of job?

My father gave me an old box brownie that had belonged to my grandfather. I used that a few times, then I got a little Nikon, and then I moved into Canons.

What do you love about the job?

I look at nature and I try to get onto paper exactly what I see, with the colours and the textures. I just dream photography. And I see my work as a heritage I can leave to my kids.

Do you expect to stay in the job?

Yes. Over the past 12 months I have been getting more recognition for my work. I have donated pictures for the Good Friday raffle for the past three years. I recently won a calendar photo competition and the prize was a photo editing course at the Neighbourhood Centre. It was fantastic. Since then I have been doing all my own editing. I have a friend in Wodonga and we are thinking of setting up a studio together and moving into portraiture and wedding photography.

What do you do in your spare time?

My partner and I love to travel. We have a caravan and love to stay at the beach where I can take beach pictures. We have also been on several cruises. Also, I love cooking.
