What is your job?

I am a French and music teacher at Mount Beauty Primary School. I teach preps to year six three days a week, and do CRT work the rest of the time.

At the moment we are practising French songs and plays for the arts night. I only started working here this term.

Is it something you always wanted to do?

No. When I was young, being a teacher never crossed my mind. I didn’t like school, probably because none of the teachers I had were all that good.

I grew up in Canada and French is my first language. I learned English at school but I didn’t speak it regularly until I moved to the West Coast when I was 21.

I moved there for a change, the way you do when you’re in your 20s.

I worked in hospitality, and I met Simon my Australian sweetheart in (the Canadian ski resort of Whistler, and we got married in Las Vegas. After we had a baby we came back to Australia and lived in Torquay, which is my husband’s home town.

I did a personal training course, but I wanted a bit more so I went to Deakin University to study psychology. After a year I changed to teaching, with a psychology major.

How do you come to be in the job?

After I qualified, I found it very hard to get a job near Geelong. Then I got a six-month contract at Wandiligong.

We had been coming up here to the snow for about seven years and had been thinking of moving up for some time. We moved in January, and then I got the job at Mt Beauty.

What do you love about the job?

I love the kids. I love their energy. I love it when you see the penny drop and they suddenly get what you’re talking about.

I love the challenge – there’s never a boring day.

Teaching my native tongue is a great pleasure too, especially with the little kids – they are naturals.

What do you do in your spare time?

Snowboarding. I’ve been doing that since I was 12, and I’ve been skiing since I was three.

I got back on skis for the first time for ages recently. My kids go to Falls Creek Primary School and they do a lot of skiing there.

I did the Joey Hoppet with my daughter last week. It was great fun.

We have just started mountain biking for the first time since we came here and we hope to get into it more in the summer.

We love going down to the river, and we love travelling.
