All Alpine resorts extend snow season
MOUNT Hotham Skiing Company has confirmed that this year’s snow season – hailed as the best in almost two decades – will be extended until October 8.
Falls for the season have totalled 420 centimetres after last week’s ‘Blizzard of Oz 3’, making it possible to extend the usual close of the season for the first time in 17 years.
Falls Creek and Mount Buller resorts are also extending the seasons above Mount Beauty and Mansfield.
Mt Hotham Ski Patrol director Bill Barker said the season’s fall on Hotham exceeds the height of a female giraffe.
“These conditions are among the best I have seen since 2000 and are rivalling overseas alpine resorts,” he said.
“With the passing of the most recent snow storm, the clouds have parted and guests are enjoying spring sunshine with incredible snow underfoot.”
Melbourne’s Brendan Halloran said his family had “lucked out” with some of the best September snow they had ever seen.
“Right now, we could not ask for anything better.”
Mount Hotham Skiing Company general manager Belinda Trembath said the resort was truly excited by the incredible snowfall.
“To have the three top Victorian resorts now open for the final week of school holidays provides an exciting time for families to experience quality snow at an affordable price,” she said.
Hotham’s final week of the season will include discounted lift tickets and ski- learning packages.
Some of the mountain’s favoured restaurants will also remain open.
Ms Trembath said the snow conditions were “epic” across 320 hectares of ski terrain.
There are a total of 158 runs at Hotham and Falls Creek fields.
