”Gardening through the year in Australia” - the book

Alpine Observer - - Regional Extra -

NOT sure when it’s the right time to move a plant or when to fertilise.

Or when is the best time to prune that pear tree?

And what is causing the holes in the leaves of your Hostas?

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a way to find the answers to all these questions and more, without having to wade through the internet?

A new book by Ian Spence, titled “Gardening through the year in Australia - Your monthby-month guide to what to do when in the garden”, answers them all.

It has detailed information, hints and practical projects for each month of the horticultural year.

The book discusses over 1300 seasonal tasks for every part of the garden, including the vegetable garden, ornamental gardens, flowers, lawns and outdoor living areas.

It gives advice on gardening techniques including propagation, from taking cuttings, layering and division.

There is also information on growing plants from seed and how to collect and store seeds.

The book also examines the changing climate, the weather and seasonal variations for each state, with in depth advice on sustainable watering and irrigation practices for throughout the year.

There are also handy DIY projects, like an easy to make compost bin, how to lay turf, how to make a cold frame, how to make a high sided potting tray, (which is basically a potting bench without legs) how to make a light box for growing seedlings and cuttings, and how to make an obelisk for growing climbing plants like roses, clematis and sweet peas.

Each month features a handy checklist of the monthly jobs to be done and beautiful coloured photographs of plants in flower for that month.

There are inspirational designs and planting guides for each season, including plans and plant lists for creating an herbaceous perennial summer border and planting a perennial autumn border.

There is also an A-Z plant directory with siting and growing advice, and suitable planting partners.

Thanks to the Wangaratta Library for the loan of this book to review.

Happy gardening.
