Policy to help spread state population growth
THE State Opposition will actively pursue a population policy which seeks to deliver Wangaratta and other regional Victorian centres more of the state’s population growth.
Danny O’Brien (MLA, Gippsland South), who was yesterday announced chair of the Liberal-Nationals Victorian Population Policy Taskforce, said the Coalition was developing a population policy “that will help us manage the enormous population growth in our state and ensure it is better distributed across the whole of Victoria”.
“The Liberals and Nationals realise Melbourne can’t continue to grow at its current rate (of more than 100,000 people a year) while regional Victoria struggles,” he said.
“Through forums around the state over the last 18 months we have clearly heard of the need for better public transport, roads, infrastructure and other services and we are currently developing policy that will meet these needs.”
