Mt Beauty dux takes a world view
KATERINA Trnka is Mount Beauty Secondary College dux for 2017.
This year’s college captain had been busy on Friday attending her sister’s graduation in Albury and picking up a horse in Myrtleford before she switched on her mobile telephone at 2pm.
Her teacher delivered the good news – which came with her Australian tertiary admission rank (ATAR) score of 87.30.
Katerina had earlier been voted ‘the person most likely to be dux’ by her year 12 class.
She studied global politics and visual communications and design last year as VCE subjects, and this year history revolutions, English literature and studio art.
“I am really open and undecided about my next step” she said.
“There is a creative writing course at RMIT which is based on a lot of discussion with other writers, which sounds very innovative and interesting, but it is very competitive and difficult to get into.
“I am also looking at a global scholar course at Deakin University.”
“It is all about international relations and community development, and part of the course involves studying at an overseas university”
Katerina decided early that a maths and science stream did not appeal to her and she opted instead for English and humanities subjects.
“I thought it would be in my better interests to do subjects that really interested me,” she said.
Katerina will move to Melbourne in January to live with her sister, Anna, who has just qualified as a physiotherapist.
In the meantime she plans to spend time with her horse, which has been suffering from a bit of neglect during the weeks of study and exams.
