UPPER Kiewa Lions Club’s Carols by Candlelight last week attracted a crowd of almost 300 to sing the season.

The community carols are run annually by the club, with the support of the Bright Lions, whose members sell snowcones, popcorn and fairy floss to complement drinks, sausages and burgers supplied by the Upper Kiewa Lions.

The event was hosted by Nick Brown, and supported by the Mount Beauty and District Community Band led by conductor Glenn Ramage, Mt Beauty Singers and choirs from the Tawonga and the Mt Beauty primary schools.

The night is traditionally one for families and dozens rolled up with blankets, picnics and eskies of champagne to celebrate Christmas.

Santa arrived a little after 9pm with bags of sweets for the children.

The event ended with a rousing delivery of ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’.

Nick said that he had enjoyed the evening, particularly the contribution from school students.

“There were certainly more people there than there have been in the past few years,” he said.

“It’s always lovely to see the community getting together to celebrate and watch the kids running around and having a great time.”
