Taxi service to continue
AFTER passing its three month trial in late November, Alpine Community Taxis is now expanding to the Kiewa Valley.
James and Denise Wei who established Alpine Community Taxis last August, recently purchased the Mt Beauty taxi service from Brian and Liz Cuffe.
The Cuffe’s had been looking to sell the business since 2015 and were willing to move on even if it wasn’t sold.
They’re now thrilled that the Mt Beauty community will remain with a taxi for the foreseeable future.
“We felt horrible at the prospect of leaving the community without a taxi, but the community was very understanding about it,” Liz said.
“We did everything we could to find a taker, but we needed to get on with our lives.
“We are over the moon that it has finally sold.”
Alpine Community Taxis will own but not operate the service and are currently advertising for drivers in both Mt Beauty and Myrtleford.
The job requires accreditation to drive a commercial passenger vehicle and a medical check.
Although Kiewa Valley locals, the Cuffe’s will relocate to Cairns where Liz’s children and grandchildren live.
Brian ‘Cuffy’ started the busi- ness in the early 1990s, and due to health reasons began job-sharing with Mick Canning in 2003 before his wife joined him in 2007.
The couple started advertising the sale of the service three years ago and last October announced they would be retiring even if the business was not sold.
“That generated a lot of inter- est,” Brian said.
“A lot more people started looking seriously at it, and in January we got our offer. “We are ecstatic. “It would have been a big financial loss for us, but we were prepared for that.
“We wanted to get on with the next phase of our lives.”
It is anticipated that the new owners will begin operating the taxi in April.
Driver applications for both Myrtleford and Mt Beauty close on February 15.
