Skippers five not enough for Bright
A FIVE-wicket haul for Bright captain Darcy Martin was not enough to propel his team to an unlikely victory against City Colts on Saturday.
The Wanderers made just 124 in the first weeks play and after two early wickets on day two struggled to make too many further inroads against on the second placed Colts.
Opening the bowling, Martin dismissed Greg Staynes (4) and Adam Looker (11) to have the home team 2/30 but an 83-run stand between prolific scorer Glenn Looker (78) and Aaron Thrum (27) took the life out of the contest.
Martin’s co-skipper Dylan Bursill made a breakthrough in the first over after the tea break but with just 11 runs remaining the outcome was never in doubt with an attacking innings of 36 from Jalees Khan pushing Colts close to 100 ahead.
The match was called with the hosts on 8/225, the result all but ending Bright’s hopes of playing finals.
Martin finished with 5/69 while Bursill claimed 2/34.
The Wanderers are last on the ladder with two matches remaining and face secondbottom Benalla over the next two weekends.
Bright will need a strong result to move off the bottom the table but will take confidence knowing they defeated the Bushrangers in the opening round of the season.
