Top Pan­thers recog­nised for strong per­for­mances

POREPUNKAH Pan­thers con­cluded their 2018 base­ball sea­son with a bar­be­cue and pre­sen­ta­tion af­ter­noon re­cently while recog­nis­ing their best per­form­ers.

The Pan­thers fin­ished run­ners in the North East Base­ball As­so­ci­a­tion B Grade com­pe­ti­tion af­ter win­ning it last year’s ti­tle.

They wel­comed back a num­ber of past play­ers dur­ing the sea­son while pres­i­dent Paul Med­dings said the in­tro­duc­tion of new and younger play­ers to the ros­ter and the con­tin­u­a­tion of the ju­nior pro­gram was also promis­ing for the club.

Star player Rian Banks cleaned up at the awards tak­ing home the Most Valu­able Player award and Best in Fi­nals.

Banks had an as­tound­ing bat­ting aver­age of .500, field­ing aver­age of 949 and in his 17 in­nings of pitch­ing du­ties, ob­tained 16 strike­outs.

In the fi­nals se­ries, Banks threw all but one of the 14 in­nings in­volved for 13 strike­outs.

With the bat, he had four safe hits from seven bats, and bat­ted in two run­ners.

Heath An­ders re­ceived the Pan- thers’ most votes from um­pires and fin­ished run­ner-up in the club’s MVP.

An­ders also fin­ished run­ner-up in the league’s best player award for his bat­ting aver­age of .406 and im­pres­sive 14 stolen bases while also pick­ing up 24 strike­outs.

Med­dings was named as the best club per­son for the year af­ter his tire­less work look­ing af­ter the club in all as­pects from spon­sor­ship to mark­ing di­a­monds.

Randy Skip­pen re­ceived the most im­proved award for his dra­matic in­crease in con­tri­bu­tion on the di­a­mond.

Skip­pen’s field­ing aver­age went up to .750 and he took two great catches in the grand fi­nal.

With the bat, Skip­pen got on base 46 per cent of the time, up from 29 per cent in 2017 and was also ad­judged as the Pan­thers’ sec­ond best on grand fi­nal day

Vet­eran of 79 games Shane Tat­ter­son, who will leave the club to re­lo­cate with his fam­ily to Ade­laide, was also recog­nised for his ser­vice to the club with a signed ball from his team­mates.
