WITH the towering peak of Mount Bogong as a backdrop, the Mount Beauty Golf Club will play host to the Victorian Power Industry Golf Championships this Melbourne Cup weekend from November 2 to 4.

The 2018 Power Industry Association (PIA) annual state championships are returning to the town for the first time since 1988, and is expected to attract about 100 golfers.

The PIA consists of 25 state-wide affiliated compa- nies, now representing elements of the former State Electricity Commission of Victoria, which established the Mount Beauty township in 1949 to house construction workers for the Kiewa Hydroelectric Scheme.

This year’s championship will be the 69th staging of the event, and is open to all power industry affiliated golfers and their partners from around Victoria.

While the event requires a Golf Australia-recognised handicap to compete, the competition caters to players of all abilities and is a great networking opportunity for the industry.

PIA state chairman, Stewart Cluning, who works at AGL Loy Yang explained “Mount Beauty Golf Club is a small club with a modest clubhouse and a passionate team of volunteers looking forward to our event,”

“Our community of golfers have already booked over half of the caravan parks and accommodation beds in town. It should be a real windfall for the town,” he said.

Stephen Short is the president of the Mount Beauty Golf Club, and says he’s both nervous and excited to be hosting the event.

“It’s going to be massive for us; we haven’t conducted an event of that size since 1988,” Short said.

Last year AGL’s Loy Yang team won the championship held in Bendigo, but the reining champions expect stiff competition this year from Mount Beauty golfers whose local knowledge will surely be an advantage.
