ACCC TO MONITOR ISP’S NBN SPEEDS, PROVIDE RESULTS TO PUBLIC.
In an effort to hold ISPs accountable for the quality of service they provide to customers, communications minister Senator Mitch Fifield has announced a new Broadband Performance Monitoring and Reporting (BPMR) program that will be funded by the federal government and overseen by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). Reportedly costing $7 million over four years, the scheme will see monitoring hardware installed in roughly 4,000 volunteer households around the country. “This program will see the ACCC test and report on the typical speed and performance of broadband plans provided over the NBN,” said ACCC chairperson Rod Sims, further explaining that the “information will assist consumers in comparing and shopping around, and checking that they receive what they are paying for.” According to the ACCC, the program will kick off immediately with comparative data expected to be released to the public during the second half of the year. The BRMR will be based on a three-month pilot program that took place in Melbourne in 2015.
