A live transcription app that sadly didn’t like our Aussie accent. FREE WITH IAP | WWW.BLUESHIFTDEVELOPMENT.COM/STENO

As anyone who must transcribe interviews for a living must surely know, transcribing is among the most tedious tasks one can complete while seated. So apps like Steno are meant to help out: it’s a voice recorder which also tries to offer a transcription as the conversation is happening. It’s a dream come true, but alas, not a particularly vivid dream. The problem is that Steno doesn’t transcribe especially well, though I’m willing to blame that on my rural NSW accent. To be honest, I could barely recognise the transcription offered after running a short test conversation with it, and I was speaking clearly (I thought), without interruptions. But, of course, your mileage may vary, and the app is free to try, offering 30 minutes of transcription and then an additional 50 minutes for $0.99, 250 minutes for $3.99 and 500 minutes for $6.99. If you speak the Queen’s English, maybe you’ll have some luck.
