Blackwood down River
Margaret River men were defeated 3-1 to Blackwood on Sunday.
The River men’s team took a massive backwards step in their bid to win the South West League 1 title after this result.
The league standings prior to the game saw both teams level on points, with River in second place ahead on goal difference.
Having won their last 10 games since losing the opening three league games, River would have fancied their chances going into this game, but absentees and players only able to play a portion of the game told a different story.
Blackwood were up for this game and took it to Margs in the early stages, being first to the ball and having an aggressive edge to their game and did not take long to open the scoring.
Against the run of play, River equalised when Gordon Becker got on to the end of Gullimere Gomes’ pass, who was one of the players who had to leave at half-time.
The River now had the wind at their backs in the second half, but this advantage was quickly overturned when the Blackwood forward broke the River off side trap in only the second minute of resumed play — taking his chance well 1 to 2.
River were still in the game, with Tom Collins going closest with a curling effort from the edge of the 18-yard box, being pushed around the post by the Blackwood keeper.
This was River’s last decent chance for an equaliser, before Blackwood once again got in behind the River defence, if not for a brilliant save from keeper Gregor Small, should have made the result beyond doubt for Blackwood.
However, Blackwood did then put the game beyond doubt after intercepting a headed back pass and rounding Gregor Small to make the scoreline 3-1 in Blackwood’s favour with only five minutes of play remaining.
Margaret River play Hay Park away on Sunday, July 30.
