Raiders bite Redbacks for title
Margaret River Raiders have defeated Busselton Redbacks 2-0 for this year’s Youth League Boys’ title.
The Margaret River boys were confident before the game and believed they could bring the title back to the town after a few years’ absence.
The Raiders began to show a bit more hunger for the ball and promise early on, creating the first few real attacks.
Midway through the first half, Travis O’Shea won the ball in the air with a towering header over a bigger opponent and sent the ball to the feet of Callum Stevenson, who laid off a great pass to Nick Gaman.
He found space on his right and took the ball into the box, then smashed home a shot to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. The second half saw more of a fight from both teams, with the large crowd enjoying the tussle.
Busselton started to show some fight, and without some great keeping from the River goalie and fine tackles from Ryan Goh-Edwards and Alister White in defence, the scoreline could have changed easily.
As the clock ticked into the final 10 minutes, Ethan Hamilton, with some of the best skill he has ever shown, managed to beat three Busselton players and pass off to Angus Dowding.
Dowding hit a shot from outside the 18-yard box into the top corner, leaving the Redbacks goalie no chance to save. This was a cracking shot to win the game and the league for the FMR Raiders.
The Margaret River boys hope to top off their victory when they take on MacKillop Magik in the cup final in Busselton tomorrow at noon.
