Raiders hold on to take cup

Augusta Margaret River Times - - Sport -

The Football Margaret River youth league boys took out the hotly contested cup final on Saturday, with the Raiders beating the MacKillop Magik 1-0.

It was a tough and tense affair in front of a big crowd, full of many who trekked to Busselton to support the Margaret River boys in their quest to win the league and cup double.

This game was only ever going to be decided by a goal or two as they had played out a 1-1 result in their last encounter.

The Raiders were unlucky not to take an early lead when Donnie Longmore cut in from the side and had his shot saved by the MacKillop keeper.

But midway through the first half, the River boys took a deserved lead when Angus Dowding split the defence with a beautiful ball, which Nick Gaman got on to with a welltimed run and shot low into the corner. Raiders’ Jarrah Webb and Jye Halsall continued with solid challenges, trying to create movement out of the midfield.

MacKillop had a few chances in the latter stages of the half, but the Raiders’ backline and Jykia River in goal held tight.

The second half was a battle, with both teams creating chances.

With MacKillop continuing forward pressure, it was down to Liam Mattinson, Ryan Goh-Edwards and Brenton Tebbutt, who stood firm.

An amazing goalmouth scramble was the highlight of the game, with the Raiders fortunate to come out on top.

Margaret River had some stand-out performances, but it was Travis O’Shea and captain Ali White who led by example and put their bodies on the line, as they have done all season.

Luke Harney, Ethan Hamilton, Nick Gaman and Brenton Hamilton all played their last game for the Raiders.

The Football Margaret River Raiders celebrate their 2017 cup win.
