Town to host pro tourney
Margaret River will host a professional tennis tournament this weekend, with local and interstate players vying for the top prize in the Margaret River Gold Australian Money Tournament.
The event will run from Saturday until Tuesday, with players competing for $10,000 in prize money.
The AMT is sponsored by the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River and the event will be hosted by the Margaret River Tennis Club.
Tennis club president Drew Szandtner said it was a great opportunity for Margaret River residents to experience professional sport being played in the region.
“We are honoured to have the op- portunity to host the AMT tournament,” he said.
Tennis West chief executive Michael Roberts said Margaret River was a big drawcard for players.
“There will be some world-class tennis and the event is free for spectators,” he said.
South West players will feature across the men’s and women’s draws, including ex-Margaret River resident Angie Nathan and Busselton’s Joshua Grace.
“I don’t have any expectations going into it, except to enjoy being back on the court in my home town,” Nathan said.
A free children’s tennis program will also be held at 9am on Sunday.
