School seeks volunteers for mentor project
Margaret River Senior High School is seeking volunteers for the school’s mentor program.
Year 12 student Jacob Buckland will graduate in November, and said he owed his schooling success to local businessman Lloyd Shepherdson.
“When I started high school, I struggled to make friends and I had a lot of behavioural problems because of that,” he said.
“I started the mentor program with Lloyd when I was in Year 8, and it gave me back my self-esteem and the power of resilience.
“The time we spend together helps me get things off my chest which makes getting on with school work easier.”
The program, which has run successfully for several years, involves community members volunteering to give support to students who are seeking guidance.
Mr Shepherdson said it was a fantastic opportunity for students to debrief on how they were feeling.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s school, life or social matters, we are here to provide support,” he said.
“Jacob and I spent a semester doing metalwork and we made a sword.
“It was fantastic bonding time that’s valuable for students having a hard time with school life.”
Program co-ordinator Kathryn Seisun said a similar program was set up across local primary schools to help students transition to high school
Community members wanting to volunteer can register at edconn ectaustralia.org.au.
