Scrub fire raises serious concern: VFRS

Augusta Margaret River Times - - News -

Margaret River Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service workers were called to a scrub fire on Railway Terrace on Sunday night.

Authorities were alerted to a native grass tree that was alight, and volunteers assessed the surrounding area.

The fire was put out just before 8pm.

No other fires or people were found in the area, but VFRS Captain Jeff Bushby suspected it was a deliberately lit fire.

“This was a serious offence, no matter how big the fire was,” he said.

“Spot fires like this are not overly common for Margaret River, but unfortunately it is becom- ing more frequent, and it is a serious concern. This kind of behaviour is no longer isolated to the big cities like it used to be.

“It’s a regional matter too, and it’s clearly linked to some kind of behavioural issue.”

Margaret River VFRS asks anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour to call triple-0.
