Small schools to hit high notes at music festival

Augusta Margaret River Times - - News -

A new music festival debuts next week which organisers hope will become a regular fixture on the local calendar.

The Small Schools Big Day Out event premieres at the Margaret River Montessori school next Friday, October 27, combining with the Margaret River Independent School and St Thomas More Catholic School to produce a night of junior rock bands showcasing the region’s best young musicians.

A special VIP appearance from spoon-playing maestro Deb Perry will also entertain families attending the gig, which features live music from 4-7pm with food and drink stalls, face painting, raffles and crafts.

Montessori principal Lisa Fenton said the festival had its genesis in the school’s successful rock band program run by teacher Tony Lane. “A few of those involved in our school rock band (were) talking to Tony about creating some more performance opportunities,” she told the Times.

“We have a really strong school rock band, some key members are in Year 6 and heading off to high school next year, so we wanted to give them as many opportunities as we.”

The festival idea also allowed the district’s smaller schools to collaborate and for older students to mingle before high school, Ms Fenton said. Margaret River Primary School already hosts twice-yearly rock band nights at Settlers Tavern and Mr Lane works closely with other schools’ music teachers involved in that program which served as an early inspiration.

“Our school has some awesome music students playing in two bands (rock and acoustic) and a choir,” Mr Lane said.

“They have performed regularly at assemblies and school sundowners but they really wanted and deserved an opportunity to play to a wider audience.”

Mr Lane said it was also a chance for the young musicians to social- ise and test themselves in front of a bigger audience.

“It should be a great communitybuilding event with many parents and kids coming together in a fun social setting,” he said.

Ms Fenton said other schools would host the festival in future years as a fundraiser.

“It is sure to be an absolute winner event for the whole family,” she said.

Small Schools Big Day Out start at 3.30pm, October 27, at the Montessori school on Clarke Road, Margaret River.
