President’s pic request irks senator
Shire of Augusta-Margaret River president Pam Townsend has irked One Nation after posing for a picture with visiting members last week.
Cr Townsend asked for the photo of herself with One Nation Senator for WA Peter Georgiou to be removed from social media after learning it was being used for the party’s promotional efforts.
Cr Townsend posted: “Can you please take this photo down of me with One Nation people. I do not want to be associated with you.”
Senator Georgiou said he and his associates “made the effort to visit your shire in a bid to unearth local issues which may resonate in the State and Federal Parliaments.”
“As loyal WA MPs, this was our chief objective for the people that you also represent,” he said.
“We had no political agenda and we are baffled and insulted that you would take such a stance in the position that you hold, especially after you agreed to meet us and have the photo taken for social media purposes.”
Cr Townsend said it was not One Nation she didn’t want to be associated with specifically. “I don’t want to be associated with any political party and I would have said the same to any party,” she said.
“I was asked by our CEO to meet with Peter and his staff in the Shire offices and I agreed for a photo.”
Cr Townsend said other councillors shared her view.
“We are an apolitical Shire and we don’t run our politics on party lines,” she said.
