Big turnout for Aus­tralia Day fun run

Augusta Margaret River Times - - Sport - Therese Col­man Mar­garet River’s Zoe Map­ley won the women’s open 5km at the Bun­bury Run­ners Club Aus­tralia Day Fun Run last Fri­day.

Mar­garet River’s Zoe Map­ley won the women’s open 5km at the an­nual Bun­bury Run­ners Club Aus­tralia Day Fun Run last Fri­day, with a time of 21min.26sec.

The 16-year-old had oc­ca­sion­ally run with the Mar­garet River Trail Run­ners for two years, and the Aus­tralia Day run was her se­cond com­pet­i­tive race.

Map­ley beat Laura Lom­bardo by one se­cond.

She said she was aim­ing to beat her per­sonal best, which she did, but was sur­prised to win the fe­male cat­e­gory.

Map­ley thanked her train­ing part­ner, who was a great mo­ti­va­tor.

Pete An­drew, Glen Gib­son and Steve Weller placed first to third re­spec­tively in the men’s 10km run, and Han­nah Strike, Tjirra Evans and Mel Vali placed in the top three in the women’s 10km.

More than 450 run­ners com­peted in 10km run, 5km run and 5km walk events.
