Big turnout for Australia Day fun run
Margaret River’s Zoe Mapley won the women’s open 5km at the annual Bunbury Runners Club Australia Day Fun Run last Friday, with a time of 21min.26sec.
The 16-year-old had occasionally run with the Margaret River Trail Runners for two years, and the Australia Day run was her second competitive race.
Mapley beat Laura Lombardo by one second.
She said she was aiming to beat her personal best, which she did, but was surprised to win the female category.
Mapley thanked her training partner, who was a great motivator.
Pete Andrew, Glen Gibson and Steve Weller placed first to third respectively in the men’s 10km run, and Hannah Strike, Tjirra Evans and Mel Vali placed in the top three in the women’s 10km.
More than 450 runners competed in 10km run, 5km run and 5km walk events.
