Grommets top notch
The Capes’ grommet surfers showed strong presence at event nine of the Woolworths Surfer Groms Competition at Trigg Beach at the weekend.
Dunsborough’s Dylan Vernon claimed victory in the blue ribbon under-14 boys’ division, and earned an all-expenses-paid place at a surf camp at Hurley Surfing Australia’s High Performance Centre.
Vernon said it was a “dream come true”.
“The trip to the HPC is definitely the best prize you can win at a comp and it's going to be an amazing opportunity that I'm looking forward to,” he said.
Margaret River’s Danny Benedetti, Zali Hewson, Lilli Cox, Summer Sunderland, Josh Willcox, Ruby Berry, George Simpson and Okie Fraser, alongside Yallingup’s Remy North were also on fire.
Simpson and Benedetti placed third and fourth respectively in the under-14 boys’ division, just behind Trigg’s Jack Mickle, who placed second to Vernon.
Denmark’s Isi Campbell placed first in the under-14 girls’ division, followed by Margaret River trio Hewson, Cox and Sunderland who placed second, third and fourth, respectively.
Hewson and Cox fought hard in the finals, and were fresh off the back of Taj’s Small Fries the previous weekend, where Hewson took the victory and Cox placed fourth in the under-14 girls’ division.
Willcox placed fourth in the under-12 boys’ division, and Berry placed second in the under-12 girls.
Yallingup’s Remy North and Margaret River’s Okie Fraser placed first and second in the under-10 boys’ division. Surfing WA’s Justin Majeks said the event created an atmosphere for the next generation of WA surfers.
“This truly unique event caters for just the little ones of our sport,” he said. “The games, giveaways and a format that allows for maximum participation in a friendly and encouraging environment.”
The final Woolworths Surfer Groms Competition of the season will be held at Clifton Beach in Tasmania on Saturday, February 24.
