FMR battle to claim draw
Football Margaret River drew its crucial match against Australind at the weekend, though the women’s side and the masters had strong victories.
Thrashed 5-0 on their last outing, FMR were determined to return the favour in the last home game of the season, but after going three goals down with 30 minutes to run, the draw was a good outcome.
Margaret River started well, making most of the running, but passing near goal let the side down many times. Australind’s speedy wingers’ “kick and run” tactics dominated possession.
Margs keeper Marin Kurita pulled off two fine saves, but could not contain the damage.
The River’s right-side midfielder Gordon Becker got around his marker, finally delivering a great low cross, beating Australind’s keeper and leaving an easy tap-in for defender Michael Sturgess.
Another goal from Tom Collins drew FMR closer, and with 10 minutes to equalise, the team pushed forward with a carefree attitude for defence.
Josiah Allington, playing as last man sweeper, got on to a cross with a looping header over Australind’s stranded keeper for the draw. Both teams played out the dying minutes without further scoring.
