Shire says no rates holiday for main street businesses

Augusta Margaret River Times - - NEWS -

The Shire of Augusta-Margaret River says it has considered and ruled out for now the idea of a rates holiday for main street landlords set to be hit by next year’s redevelopment. Shire chief executive Gary Evershed said it had previously been suggested and considered.

However, Mr Evershed said main street businesses would benefit from the finished upgrade and there was no guarantee a year off rates for landlords would flow through to traders in reduced rents. “Depending upon the extent of any concession, there would be a substantial impact upon the Shire’s rating revenue, which would need to be made up from other areas, as over $1 million in rate revenue is currently obtained from main street businesses,” he said.
