Botham salutes region in wine range selection

Augusta Margaret River Times - - Time Out -

Former England cricketer Sir Ian Botham has paid tribute to the Margaret River wine region by including a local chardonnay in his new wine range.

The Sir Ian Botham wine collection, in partnership with Benchmark Drinks, includes three sub-tiers of wines with the chardonnay in the midrange known as “The Botham Series”.

The Margaret River 76 Series chardonnay is in honour of Botham’s “year of firsts” in cricket.

The year 1976 was the first time he scored 1000 runs in one season, achieved his first century and was selected to play for England at the age of 20.

It was also the year he played grade cricket for the Melbourne Cricket Club.

Grapes for the wine were sourced from a variety of vineyards across the Margaret River wine region, and the collection was launched at Lord’s Cricket Ground last Friday.

Botham, who is nicknamed “Beefy”, is widely regarded as one of the greatest cricketers to come from England.

He has travelled the world building his knowledge and appreciation of wine.

The 76 Series chardonnay is available online and will be distributed to major bottle shops over the coming months.
