The FOX SPORTS analyst gets into 10th A-League Grand Final mood with a retro team from the first 10 years of the NSL, 1977 to 1986

Australian Four Four Two - - JUNE 2015 -

The FOX SPORTS analyst picks his dream team from the grand finals of the first 10 years of the old NSL. There’s even a place for Arnie in there...

GK TODD CLARKE Sydney City

Outstanding keeper that just hated losing...a real winner! Slight in build but aggressive in the air and an incredible shot-stopper.

RB JIM CANT Canberra Arrows, Marconi, Sydney City

Incredibly versatile, intelligent, great athlete and great team player with a fair touch of skill. Went about his job with minimum fuss but got it done.

CB STEVE O’CONNOR Sydney City

A tough and intimidating defender that loved the physical battle as much as he liked to play…probably too much for his coach, Eddie Thomson.

CB DAVE RATCLIFFE Brisbane City, St George

Very reliable defender that kept it simple and wouldn’t take crap from anyone – team-mates and opponents alike. Never shirked responsibility.

LB VIC BOZANIC

West Adelaide, Apia, St. George A right-footed left back with a thunderbolt shot who loved attacking. If the name is familiar he is the father of Oliver of Socceroos and CCM fame.

RM ‘JINKY’ JOE WATSON Sydney City

Jinky terrorised fullbacks with his dribbling skill and acute sense of timing. Not quick but could turn an opponent in knots and get away to cross it in.

CM MURRAY BARNES Sydney City

An intellectual, Barnesy was a bit different. A great orator and exceptional leader, he was hard as nails. A box to box, goalscoring midfielder that loved getting forward and getting on the end of any ball that came into the area.

CM TONY HENDERSON Canberra and Marconi

A skilful and clever holding midfielder with good touch and awareness who was brought in by Johnny Warren to play in the inaugural season of the NSL.

LM KENNY MURPHY South Melbourne Hellas

‘Smurf’ was quick and a very good dribbler. Great at ‘skinning’ his full-back down the line and loved taking players on. Could play inside as well.

CF GARY COLE Heidelberg

Big, strong, very mobile, good touch and knew how to finish. Very good in the air as well, Coley was your classic target man that could play with both feet.

CF ROD BROWN Marconi, Apia

Even as a kid , Rooster wasn’t out of place in a league that didn’t treat youngsters well. Quick, great touch and creative he never got credit he deserved.
